The Broken Wing
P. S.
Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh
While walking home from school, Meera noticed a small bird fluttering helplessly on the footpath. Its wing was bent at a strange angle, and it could not fly. She knelt down carefully and picked it up, cradling it in her cupped hands.
At home, she showed it to her mother. Together, they placed the bird in a shoebox lined with soft cloth and gave it water and seeds. Meera's mother called a vet, who taped the wing and told them to keep the bird calm and warm for a week.
Every day, Meera whispered to the bird, reading it stories from her schoolbook, promising it would fly again. On the seventh day, the bird hopped onto the edge of the box. On the eighth, it flapped its wings. On the ninth, Meera carried it to the garden.
She opened her hands. The bird hesitated, then launched itself into the air, circling once, twice, and flying high into the mango tree. Meera watched until it disappeared, tears in her eyes but a smile on her lips. Her mother put a hand on her shoulder. "You saved a life today," she said. Meera knew she'd remember this moment forever.
